Ancient Roman Statue Bronze Figure Imperial Age Lizard
This Roman bronze statuette is truly rare and particular. It comes out of the classic religious theme and testifies to something totally different. This statuette representing a lizard was found inside the tomb of a child. The tomb was located in the cemetery area of the city of Pompeii, and dates back to around 53 AD, between the empire of Claudius and the coronation of Nero. The tomb was of a child of about 7/8 years of age, of a rich patrician family. It was almost certainly a toy he was very fond of.
The excavations took place between 1910 and 1914. This object has always belonged to my family.
M y great-grandfather, Dott Balugani Giuseppe, received this statuette from the director of the excavations. I can provide a letter of provenance signed by me.
